I was offered a full time position by State Farm which will be around 40 hours a week. I will also receive benefits one of which is health insurance. I will be working as an administrator to produce Evidence of Insurance, chase customer late payments, and underwriting follow up. In the future this could open new opportunities for me which I am very excited about. I am a little nervous because I am going into a new field of work and will be working from home once I feel confident about completing my tasks. In the past I have worked in a variety of jobs from a fast food restaurant to a company that specializes in brand advertising. I have had a difficult time finding a job that I am genuinely interested about as well as reliable. After becoming a mom of 2 beautiful boys my journey to find a career only seemed to be more impossible. I couldn't afford to go to college and pay for child care especially when I was not 100% sure about what I wanted to do. I was working part time and not happy with my employment so I began to search for career choices that could possibly allow me to be more flexible and even work from home. I somehow ended up finding the SF Insurance Academy and couldn't believe it was legit but I applied any way. Shortly after, I got in contact with Shawna, who was an angel throughout the whole process, and who walked me through every step of the way. I also had an interview with CEO Bruce, who was very kind. He explained how it all started and what the process looked like. I was skeptical at first because you won’t find opportunities like this very often but I was blown away by their support. The classes were great and provided amazing teachers who took pride and truly cared about every student passing. Before I found San Francisco Insurance Academy (SFIA), my employment/economic situation was tenuous at best after a series of unfortunate injuries. It limited my employment options and I was searching on craigslist and came upon SFIA’s ad. I am so glad I listened to my curiosity. After going through the initial application process. I qualified for the program and jumped in to begin. I did not know at this stage, what an impact this would have on my life.
I began my training by taking the 52-hour Property & Casualty prelicensing course. It was intense and required a full commitment of time and effort. The in-class instructors were extremely knowledgeable and supportive. I felt like a ton of effort went into helping us so we can pass the exam. My hesitant response to a curious advertisement from the San Francisco Insurance Academy posted on Craigslist was a life changer.
My career had stalled, to say the least, and in the seven years following the loss of my last professional position, I was accepting only short-term contract positions and gig work. What had started as a short-term step off of the grid became a life of monotony, gloom and, yes, poverty.
Then, during one of my frequent life-hating brainstorms, a new message started to emerge. It was time to step it up, and I wondered for months how I was going to get back in the game. Looking for inspiration on the job boards, I encountered the posting from the San Francisco Insurance Academy.
Right in front of me was an opportunity that just seemed too good to be true. Having worked for years in banking and finance, I understood the value of a credential issued by the California Department of Insurance. This was an opportunity not to apply for a job, but to apply myself. An opportunity to pursue something I wanted instead of marketing myself as something that “they” wanted.
I was skeptical. “That cannot be real. Who does that – helps the poor (and by this time I was poor with awful credit) become licensed in the insurance world?" Still, I wanted it to be true, so to spite myself I sent an email to the San Francisco Insurance Academy expressing my interest in their program.
It was a winning move.
A couple of weeks later I received a phone call from the Executive Director. After our chat, she arranged for a survey that would measure my customer service style and resource management skills. Following, I prepared my résumé and we met in person for an interview when I presented my financial information to qualify for participation in the program.
Twenty days later, I was in the Property and Casualty Insurance Pre-licensing Class. During the seven consecutive days of the class schedule, I continued to work every night. I awoke around three o’clock each morning to study and complete my assignments for class. I loved what I was learning. A ton of information was presented very rapidly. I reminded myself over and over that success was my goal. The Academy provided me with enthusiastic encouragement and assurance each day.
Two days after completing the required pre-licensing hours, I passed the state licensing exam. Then there was fingerprinting and a background check. My license arrived several weeks later. That was a red-letter day!
The Academy helped me with my résumé. I found the job opportunities, and they prepared me for interviews. Everyone at the Academy became invested in my success.
I have been employed for eight months as a part-time assistant with an independent agency. In three days, I begin my full-time duties in their Commercial Lines Property and Casualty department. My specialty is helping small businesses and consultants obtain the proper protection and coverage limits so that they can compete for larger contracts. My role is a tremendous point of pride in my life. I love what I am doing. The San Francisco Insurance Academy brought me to my new career.
